About
Homeowner's Guide is a free website (and soon an email newsletter) with plain-language home maintenance guides and printable checklists for homeowners across the U.S.
How guides are made
- Each guide covers one everyday problem homeowners actually run into.
- Facts come from primary sources we read ourselves: federal agencies such as ENERGY STAR, the U.S. Fire Administration, the EPA, FEMA and Ready.gov; the American Red Cross; safety groups and trade associations; and manufacturers' own instructions.
- Timing depends on where you live, so freeze-related jobs point you to your own average frost dates instead of one city's.
- Every guide lists its sources with links and shows the date we last checked them. If we can't verify something, we leave it out. Links and videos are rechecked every month.
- This is general information, not professional advice. For gas, electrical panel, roof or structural work, hire a licensed professional.
How the site is paid for
Right now it isn't: the site costs nothing to run. In the future some guides may include clearly labeled affiliate links (for example, to the exact furnace filter or detector a guide recommends). Those will always be marked, and they'll never change what a guide recommends.
